What independent advocacy does
Independent advocacy is about speaking up for an individual or group. Independent advocacy is a way to help people have a stronger voice and to have as much control as possible over their own lives. Independent Advocacy organisations are separate from organisations that provide other types of services.

It safeguards peoples’ rights
There are different types of independent advocacy. There is no one best model of advocacy, no ‘one size fits all’. The most appropriate model for any individual is likely to depend on their preferences, circumstances and situation and this may vary from time to time. In practice models of advocacy available will vary dependent on the area.

Who is independent advocacy for?
People who are disadvantaged by their situation or condition. Many of us find it difficult, at times, to get our voice heard about decisions or actions that affect our lives. At these times anyone could benefit from independent advocacy. The Mental Health (Care & Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 gives anyone with a mental disorder a right of access to independent advocacy.

SIAA advocates for independent advocacy
The Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance (SIAA) promotes, supports and defends the principles and practice of Independent Advocacy across Scotland. It is a membership organisation. Its aim is to ensure that high quality advocacy is available to everyone who needs it in Scotland.
